Citation Analysis of the Journals Cited in the Review of Related Literature and Studies

Abstract

One of the parameters used in evaluating quality research outputs is the kind of journals in which it is published and from what databases they are indexed. This preliminary study assesses the scholarly quality of research outputs by examining the journals cited in the Review of Related Literature and Studies of undergraduate theses from the College of Education at Mindanao State University-Main Campus in 2015. The evaluation focuses on whether these journals are indexed in the SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR), a reputable database within Scopus, renowned for its extensive peer-reviewed literature (Singh et al., 2011). Utilizing a citation analysis approach, the researchers manually compiled the journals, checked if they were cited in the 55 theses that were analyzed, and cross-referenced them with the SJR-indexed titles downloaded from Scopus. Results revealed that 59 out of the total 179 journal titles cited by the researchers during the 1st semester of AY 2017-2018 were SJR-indexed. Researchers who majored in Mathematics cited 102 highly cited journals compared to other majors from the college. Eleven out of the 55 undergraduate theses cited the Journal of Educational Psychology which is ranked eighth in the SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR) in 2016. The Journal of Research in Science Teaching which is ranked first in the SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR) in 2016 was mentioned four times. Lastly, 41 out of the 55 theses had Journal citations found in the list of 914 Journals in SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR) from 1996-2016.
