Abstract

Electrophoretic patterns of esterases of skin surface secretions of thirteen freshwater fish species were studied by subjecting them to thin layer polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Sensitivity of ofindividual esterase zones to three inhibitors, viz., pCMB, paraoxon, and physostigmine, was tested. The patterns were found to be species-specific as well as group-specific. The possible origin of esterases in mucus is discussed.
